We had the great pleasure of speaking with Luan, one of our amazingly talented software testers at Jarrison Systems. We spoke about his Motivation behind taking on this unique walking challenge and creating the words “Jarrison Systems You are awesome.
The best thing I do, is doing my best. Other than that, I am usually good at putting smiles on the Jarrison Family’s faces. Luan | Software Tester, Jarrison Systems
How long have you worked at Jarrison Systems?
I am on close to the 5-year mark now.
Can you describe the inspiration behind taking on this unique walking challenge and creating the message “Jarrison Systems You Are Awesome”?
The idea originally stemmed from a post a saw where a cyclist used his bike and a GPS and drove around to write out a message to his fiancé, who was also a cyclist. He wrote ‘Will you marry me?’. First, I thought, what a loser. But then I thought, I need a way to get myself motivated to start exercising more and this could be an awesome way to motivate myself and others at the same time.
Walk us through the process of tracking your walk every day. Did you have a specific route or pattern you followed to achieve the desired outcome?
I usually walked twice a day. Once during lunch time and again in the late afternoon. I would usually picture the letters that was next on the list. I had a place I would usually start and then work out from there where I needed to walk to make the specific letters.
What tools and technology did you use to track your steps and distance?
I used my smartwatch to track myself when I walked. The smartwatch app calculated the distance, time and steps from the time I start the tracking until I end it. It would have been very inaccurate if I had to calculate everything.
Did this experience teach you any valuable life lessons or skills that you can apply to your work at Jarrison Systems or in your personal life?
It has taught me that I can use my legs for something other than standing up and going to the fridge to get a beer and I can definitely apply that to my work and personal life.
What do you hope others can learn from your creative and determined approach to this walking project?
My hope is to inspire people to live a healthier life and to enjoy the journey to live that healthier life. Even if it is only one person, I would consider my work done.
Do you have any advice for individuals looking to take on similar challenges or set unique goals?
From my own experience the advice I would give to anyone looking to live a bit healthier is to start slow, but be consistent when it comes to exercising. As your body slowly starts to get used to the exercise, it wants to do it more and more and you kind of have the snowball effect that happens.
What was the reaction from the Jarrison Systems Team when you shared your unique walking project, was it everything you expected?
The reaction from the team was awesome. They supported me to continue with the walking and to continue with the health journey. I wasn’t expecting anything when I sent it to them, I just wanted to inspire people to live the best life that they can.
